| About this Painting | Jean Dufy visited Venice only twice, and Venetian subjects are among the rarest in his work. Only around 40 views of the city are recorded in an output of more than 2,500 works. This canvas dates from 1956, during his second and most important period of painting the city. It shows the lively, fluid style that sets his 1950s views apart from the more structured works he made after his first visit in 1926. The picture is built on an all-over ground of luminous blue that serves as both water and sky. Palazzi rise on both sides, their Gothic arcades, balconies and chimney pots drawn in quick strokes of ochre, red and ultramarine. Gondolas glide across the foreground, each shaped with a few confident flourishes, while weathered mooring poles lead the eye through the scene. Dufy doesn't record every architectural detail. He captures the movement, light and music of the city instead. Signed lower left, the painting is included in the Catalogue Raisonné of Jean Dufy, Vol. II, No. B.1524, compiled by Jacques Bailly, and illustrated on pages 358 and 368. It passed through Galerie Jacques Bailly, Paris, from private collections in Knokke-Heist, Belgium, and Coconut Grove, United States. |
