A fishing schooner lies broadside across the foreground of the basin, her dark sails hanging slack in blocks of brown, green and slate, the blue hull drawn in a single sweeping line along the waterline. To the right a smaller boat carries a tall lateen sail laid in as a flat plane of violet-blue against a rust-orange hull; to the left a dark barge rides at anchor. Behind them the quay runs across the picture with the pale ochre and white buildings of the town, and beyond that the masts, funnels and derricks of the commercial port sketched in thin brown. The whole is built from broad wet washes of blue, green, sienna and rose, the paper left bare between them, the forms simplified almost to geometry. There is no drawn outline anywhere: the shapes are laid straight in with the brush. Jean Dufy was born at Le Havre in 1888, the younger brother of Raoul, and the port of his birth remained one of his lifelong subjects along with Honfleur, the Île d'Yeu, Marseille and Villefranche. Largely self-taught, he worked as a shipping clerk and then as a designer for Théodore Haviland at Limoges before exhibiting at the Salon d'Automne from 1920 and showing with Berthe Weill, Jos. Hessel, Barreiro and Drouant-David in Paris, and with Hammer Galleries and the Chase Gallery in New York. His work is in the Musée National d'Art Moderne, the Art Institute of Chicago and MoMA.
