About this painting

1907 is a significant date for a Pinchon. It was the year he exhibited at the Salon d'Automne for the second time — the exhibition where he encountered Fauvism in full force and where its influence on his palette became permanent. The colours in this painting reflect exactly that moment: heightened, bold, pushed beyond what strict observation would demand, but anchored by a compositional intelligence that keeps the whole from tipping into decoration. The garden subject suits him perfectly. The layered greens of foliage, the flicker of flowers against shadow, the way light breaks across the scene in patches — these are the conditions under which his broken, confident brushwork is most at home. The impasto is thick in the lit passages, the strokes directional and purposeful. Nothing is blended. Everything is felt. Pinchon (1886–1943) was born and spent his life in Rouen, at the centre of the second great wave of the École de Rouen. Claude Monet, who saw his work in 1903, described him as possessing "a surprising touch in the service of a surprising eye." By 1907 that touch had absorbed Fauvism without surrendering to it — he was never interested in arbitrary colour for its own sake, but in what heightened colour could do to the experience of a landscape or a garden in a particular light at a particular moment. This work comes from the collection of the artist's family — the closest provenance to the painter himself that a work can carry.

    Robert Pinchon Paintings

Robert Pinchon was a student of Zacharie at the École des Beaux-Arts in Rouen, and also attended Joseph Delattre's Académie Libre there. Fréchon and Lebourg were his teachers and also his friends. He lived and worked in Rouen, where he founded the Société Normande de Peinture Normande with Dumont, Hodé and Tirvert.

Along with Dumont and Guilbert, Robert Pinchon is one of the Rouen artists who understood Monet's teachings best. Monet himself noticed Pinchon's 'eye' when he met him for the first time. On a technical level, he used pure colours, just as they came out of the tube. His poetical art perfectly rendered not only the misty lights of the port of Rouen, but also scenes of daily life, whether of a young woman sitting in a garden or children playing with a ball. Noteworthy are: Embankment in Rouen; Rouen in the Snow; Banks of the Seine; Suspension Bridge at Elbeuf.

Pinchon signed his work "R Pinchon" up until 1907 - after that dated he signed "Robert Pinchon" until 1920 when he changed to "Robert A. Pinchon".

In Paris Robert Pinchon showed at the Salon des Artistes Français, where he was awarded an honourable mention in 1930 and became a member the same year. In 2003 he featured in an exhibition, Around Impressionism: Nineteen Painters from the School of Normandy ( Autour de l'Impressionnisme: dix-neuf peintres de l'école normande) at the Maison des Arts in Antony.
