Looking up the narrow rue du Chevalier-de-la-Barre towards Sacré-Cœur, the great dome and its lesser cupolas rising pale blue-grey above the rooftops at the head of the street and filling the whole upper half of the canvas. The tall houses press in on either side, those at the right catching the sun in cream, pink and lilac, those at the left dropped into deep violet shadow with washing and shutters picked out in blue and red. A pâtisserie awning and a striped shopfront run along the right-hand pavement, and a scatter of small figures — a woman in a red skirt, men in dark coats and hats, a bench — move in the middle distance where the street falls away. The paving is worked in broad strokes of pink, lilac and pale grey. The whole is painted in a narrow range of blue, violet and warm cream, and it is a picture about the way the basilica appears suddenly at the end of an ordinary street. Born Ilya Anatolievich Pavil into a poor Jewish family in Odessa, Pavil studied at the Odessa Drawing School and exhibited with the Society of South Russian Artists before coming to Paris in 1892, settling permanently in Montmartre in 1899 in the rue Caulaincourt. He trained at the Académie Julian, was naturalised French in 1911, and spent fifty years painting the streets and inhabitants of the Butte. His first one-man show was with Georges Bernheim in 1907, followed by Galerie Georges Petit in 1921 and Galerie Charpentier in 1933; in 1923 he exhibited alongside Picasso, Signac, Utrillo, Matisse, Bonnard and Vlaminck. He took silver medals at the Salon d'Automne in 1930 and 1931 and was made Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur in 1931. He died at Rabat in 1948. His work is in the Musée d'Orsay, the Musée National d'Art Moderne and the Petit Palais.
