A winter afternoon on the Place du Tertre, the bare plane trees rising in a blue-violet screen across the whole picture and their long shadows falling across the pink and lilac paving in the foreground. Behind them the low houses of the square with their painted shopfronts — a red café front at the left, green and yellow doorways beyond, a scatter of washing hung out above — and the bulk of the Butte rising at the upper left. Figures move about the square: a woman in dark blue at the left, two more in the centre, a man crossing at the right. Pavil has painted the whole in a cool, high-keyed register of blue, lilac, cream and pink, laid on in short separate touches, with the last of the year's leaves put in as small flecks of ochre. The effect is of thin winter sun and a square emptied of its summer crowds. Born Ilya Anatolievich Pavil into a poor Jewish family in Odessa, Pavil studied at the Odessa Drawing School and exhibited with the Society of South Russian Artists before coming to Paris in 1892, settling permanently in Montmartre in 1899 in the rue Caulaincourt. He trained at the Académie Julian, was naturalised French in 1911, and spent fifty years painting the cafés, streets and inhabitants of the Butte. His first one-man show was with Georges Bernheim in 1907, followed by Galerie Georges Petit in 1921 and Galerie Charpentier in 1933, and in 1923 he exhibited alongside Picasso, Signac, Utrillo, Matisse, Bonnard and Vlaminck. He took silver medals at the Salon d'Automne in 1930 and 1931 and was made Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur in 1931. Following his wife's death he moved to Morocco, dying at Rabat in 1948. His work is in the Musée d'Orsay, the Musée National d'Art Moderne and the Petit Palais.
