Further information

This work was almost certainly painted on a day out with his father in 1920. The father and son often painted together and in the same year Henri Martin painted the same subject - see image below. The work by Henri Martin sold at Christie's in 2018 for USD 600,000.00. Its likely the two painters attempted the same subject side by side, easel by easel.

Jacques Martin-Ferrières was a pupil of his father Henri Martin as well as Cormon, Ernest Laurent. He exhibited in Paris, at the Salon des Artistes Français, of which he became a member and where he was declared hors-concours. At the Salon he received a mention in 1920, a silver medal in 1923 and a travel scholarship in 1924. He won the Prix National in 1925, and gold medal and the Institute's Prix Legay-Lebrun in 1928.

In 1965 he gave an exhibition of Venice landscapes and snowscapes. Thick layers of superimposed paint were used to animate the surface of his works and gave the effect of glittering light.
