Summary

A busy corner of the Latin Quarter under a soft, rain-washed sky, the dome of the Panthéon rising grey-blue at the end of the street. Tall Haussmann houses lean over shopfronts painted coral, green and rose, their awnings dark against the wet; below, the pavement gleams with reflected light as a crowd moves across it — women in bright coats, a figure beneath an umbrella, children, the whole square alive with small incident. Martin-Ferrières lays the scene in with his characteristic touch: short, opaque, mosaic-like strokes of broken colour over a pale ground, so that the grey Paris day shimmers rather than dulls. It is a picture about weather and movement, tender and animated at once. Jac Martin-Ferrières was the son and pupil of the great Neo-Impressionist Henri Martin, and, trained further under Cormon and Ernest Laurent, he made the divisionist inheritance his own — a mosaic surface of scintillating light. A decorated regular of the Salon des Artistes Français, honoured with silver and gold medals and the Prix National through the 1920s, he painted Paris, Venice and Collioure, and is prized today above all for his luminous, atmospheric city views. A fresh and characteristic example.
