Summary

A crowd seen from slightly above and pressed hard against the picture plane, filling the panel from edge to edge with only a band of bare, sunlit ground left open at the foot. There is no architecture and no horizon: the subject is the throng itself, and Martin-Ferrières builds it entirely from short loaded strokes of thick opaque colour, each figure a few touches of the brush and nothing more. Indigo, violet and cobalt carry the mass, lifted by yellow, scarlet and a sharp note of orange, the whole set against the pale ochre of the dusty square. The surface is heavily worked, the paint standing proud, so that the picture reads as a mosaic of pure colour at close range and resolves into a moving crowd only at a distance. The son of Henri Martin, he inherited his father’s divided touch and put it to a more robust, sunlit use. The subject belongs to his 1938 journey through Yugoslavia, during which he painted a series of market scenes and figure groups — among them Marché à Prizren — and the white felt caps worn throughout this crowd place it inland, in Kosovo or western Macedonia.
