Summary

A bunch of spring flowers fills a plain white footed cup on a draped table. Anemones in violet, crimson and rose crowd around a central yellow ranunculus, with dark centres and a tumble of green buds and stems. Martin paints the flowers with thick, swirling impasto that gives each petal body and movement. The rest of the picture is built in his signature manner: short, separate strokes laid side by side so that the colour vibrates across the surface. The background shimmers in pale green, grey and lilac. The tablecloth falls into deep blue-violet shadow, its fringed border caught by a band of yellow light. The white cup holds the centre of the composition. Martin models it in creamy strokes tinged with blue and pink, so that even the white is built from colour. Martin trained in Toulouse and Paris under Jean-Paul Laurens. He became one of the most celebrated decorative painters of the Third Republic, with commissions for the Capitole in Toulouse, the Sorbonne and the Hôtel de Ville in Paris. His distinctive divisionist touch, adapted from Seurat, is usually associated with his luminous landscapes of Labastide-du-Vert and Collioure. Intimate flower pieces such as this show the same technique applied to a quieter domestic subject.
