| About this Painting | This luminous oil on panel captures the Atlantic shore at Biarritz dissolving into the glow of a setting sun. A leading figure of French Post-Impressionism, Henri Martin developed a distinctive divisionist technique, building his compositions from short, vibrating strokes of pure, unblended colour that shimmer and coalesce when viewed from a distance. That mastery is on full display here: sky and sea are rendered as a tapestry of rose, lilac, gold and sea-green, the brushwork swirling overhead and rippling across the water in broken touches of light. A dark stand of foliage anchors the lower right, its depth setting off the iridescent expanse beyond. Trained in Toulouse and Paris, Martin exhibited at the Salon, earned its highest honours, and was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts; his work is held today in major collections including the Musée d'Orsay. This work is accompanied by a photo-certificate from Cyrille Martin and is included in the artist's catalogue raisonné, affirming its authenticity and secure place within the painter's body of work. Intimate in scale yet radiant in effect, this panel is a jewel-like example of Martin's celebrated handling of light. |
