| Literature | A jewel-like still life of mixed flowers — yellow, violet, orange and crimson blooms massed in a pale vase against a deep, sonorous ground of red and blue — painted with the thick, loaded impasto and uninhibited colour for which Louis Valtat is celebrated. The petals are built up in dense, almost sculptural touches of pure pigment, the entire surface alive with the movement and chromatic daring that set Valtat apart. One of the founding figures of Fauvism, Valtat exhibited alongside Matisse, Derain and Vlaminck at the legendary 1905 Salon d'Automne, where the group earned its name. Admired by Renoir, collected by Bonnard, and described by Monet as heralding "a new state of grace in painting," he is recognised as a pivotal figure in the passage from Impressionism to Fauvism. His work is held in major museums worldwide, including the Musée d'Orsay, Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg.Flowers were among Valtat's most enduring and sought-after subjects, and this richly worked panel is a vivid, fully documented example of his mature art. |
