Summary

A large and atmospheric Parisian street scene depicting the quais of the Seine beside Notre-Dame, the cathedral's towers and spire rising through a soft, pearly grey sky at the left. Along the parapet the bouquinistes' stalls are ranged, while figures move along the rain-washed pavement — a shawled woman with her basket, a flower-seller's barrow, strollers beneath the market awnings to the right. Painted with Loir's characteristic delicacy of tone and his unrivalled feeling for the muted light and damp atmosphere of Paris, the whole is suffused with the quiet poetry of the city on an overcast day. A large oil on canvas, signed lower right; an especially evocative example of the artist's celebrated Parisian views.
