Summary

Dusk settles over the Place de l'Opéra. To the left the Palais Garnier rises golden against a deepening blue sky, its corner pavilion crowned by Gumery's gilded winged group; to the right, the great lingerie house Doucet Jeune blazes with gaslight, its windows spilling warm yellow across the wet paving while the name is picked out in gold along the facade. Between them a single ornate candélabre burns at the centre of the square, and beneath it a dense, top-hatted crowd streams out into the evening — a scatter of white shirtfronts, a nursemaid, a carriage waiting at the edge. Loir builds it all with the jeweller's touch that made his name: fine, sparkling strokes of bodycolour over a luminous ground, every lamp and reflection a point of light. Luigi Loir was among the supreme chroniclers of Belle Époque Paris, celebrated above all for his twilight and gaslit effects, and shown throughout his career at the Salon. Painter of the 1900 Universal Exhibition poster, his work is held in French public collections including the Musée Carnavalet. A radiant nocturne of the city at its most theatrical.
