| About this Painting | The Old Port at the end of the day, seen from the Quai du Port looking west towards the harbour mouth. The cylindrical Tour du Fanal of the Fort Saint-Jean stands warm pink against the sky on its massive battered base, the fort's arcaded barrack range running away to the right; beyond, the low violet line of the far shore and the opening to the sea. A single yellow reflection falls straight down the water from a light on the mole. A lateen sail crosses the basin, a tug with a red funnel lies at the left, and two figures work a small boat in the foreground shadow, while the grey mooring bollards of the quay close the composition along the bottom edge. The whole is painted in a high, pale key of lemon, sea-green and dusty rose, the paint thin and dry, the forms simplified almost to flat planes. Durenne came to painting late. Trained in law and employed as a parliamentary stenographer, he enrolled at the Académie Julian in 1887 alongside Bonnard and Vuillard, studied under Lefebvre, Boulanger, Rixens and Courtois, and at the Académie Colarossi formed lasting friendships with Albert André, Georges d'Espagnat and Louis Valtat. He gave up his post in 1895, shared a studio with George-Daniel de Monfreid, and was close to Pissarro. He debuted at the Salon in 1898. In 1918 he settled at Endoume near Marseille, close to Albert André, and from there worked throughout Provence and the Mediterranean — Martigues, Cagnes, Rome, Venice. His work is in the Musée d'Orsay, the Musée des Augustins at Toulouse, and the Petit Palais in Geneva. |
