Summary

Evening falls over the harbour at Saint-Tropez, seen across the water towards the quays. Mendjisky builds the scene entirely from small, separate touches of pure colour. He adopted the Neo-Impressionist technique of Divisionism in 1964, and for most of his career used it to paint the light and colour of the south of France. A low sun burns through the haze at upper left as a bloom of orange, rose and yellow. Its reflection runs down the water in a broken column of the same warm colours, set against the surrounding blues and violets. At the centre, the harbour mouth and the slender tower at the end of the jetty almost dissolve into mist. To the right, the buildings along the quay emerge as cool blue masses, their windows picked out in points of lamplight, with boats moored below. The hillside and sky become a dense mosaic of ultramarine, violet and slate. The subject has a long history. Saint-Tropez was Signac's harbour and the birthplace of Mediterranean divisionism, and Mendjisky takes up that tradition here. His soft gradations of blue and rose are typical of his work, and the result is a picture concerned with light and atmosphere rather than topography.
