Summary

A crowded beach in full summer light, framed by two parasols — scarlet at the left, emerald at the right — with a third, furled in blue and green, standing like a cypress at the centre. Between them a striped orange windbreak shelters two figures stretched out in the sand, while bathers in pale flesh tones and blue costumes stand and sprawl across the wide band of cream and yellow shore. Beyond lies a strip of turquoise sea carrying a scatter of sailing boats with yellow, pink and blue sails, and the sky is worked in the same pale greens and blues as the water, so that the whole upper half of the canvas shimmers. The entire surface is built from small separate dabs of thick unmixed colour laid side by side — the divisionist method Mendjisky developed from Van Gogh and Cézanne and practised from about 1950 until 2000, and which brought him international recognition before he turned to photographic work. Younger son of the School of Paris painter Maurice Mendjizky, he had no conventional training: his father introduced him instead to Picasso and Dunoyer de Segonzac, who both became lifelong friends.
