Summary

A winter landscape under thin sunshine: a rising hillside dusted with snow, bare poplars and a track curving past a low cottage where a solitary figure makes her way, the whole rendered in cool blues, lilacs and silvery whites flecked with touches of warm ochre. Painted with the broken, vibrant brushwork and exquisite sensitivity to winter light for which Lebourg is admired, it captures the still, luminous atmosphere of a Norman morning with great delicacy. A leading figure of the École de Rouen, Albert Lebourg exhibited alongside Monet, Sisley and Renoir and counted Degas among his friends. He was made Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur in 1903 and Officier in 1924, and his work is held in major museums including the Musée d'Orsay, Paris, and the Musée Marmottan Monet. Snow scenes and the landscapes of his native Normandy are among his most sought-after subjects, the present work a particularly atmospheric example of his handling of winter light.
