Summary

An early morning on the Maas, the sun still low and veiled, its warmth spread across the whole upper half of the canvas in pale cream and apricot with a flush of rose at the top left corner. Against it the far bank reads as a single band of blue and turquoise — a church spire, the sails of a windmill, bare poplars, the stacks of a factory trailing smoke — all flattened by the haze into silhouette, with no detail permitted to break the atmosphere. To the right, a tall gabled warehouse stands darker and nearer. Barges lie moored along the left bank, their pale cargo covers catching the light, and a single figure works a rowing boat out into mid-stream, his reflection running down through water laid in with long horizontal strokes of blue, white and the sky’s own cream. The handling is wet and rapid throughout, the paint thin over a warm ground, and the whole picture is held together by light rather than by drawing — Lebourg at his most purely Impressionist, and on one of the Dutch campaigns that produced his finest river subjects.
