Summary

A sunlit scene of figures at leisure on the banks of the Seine by Pierre-Eugène Montézin, one of the finest French Post-Impressionist landscape painters of the early twentieth century. A small group — a woman in a pale blue dress, a child, and one or two further companions — sits in the dappled shade of slender trees whose canopy filters the light into a shimmering mosaic of greens and blues. Beyond them the Seine catches the light and carries the eye to the warm terracotta rooftops of a village on the far bank. The painting is handled with the confident, generous brushwork for which Montézin is celebrated, the foliage built up through broken touches of colour and the grass rendered in rich, layered greens that range from deep shadow to vivid sunlit passages. The figures are suggested with economy, their forms integrated into the landscape rather than imposed upon it. The overall effect is one of warmth, stillness, and the particular quality of light found along the Seine in summer — a subject to which Montézin returned throughout his career and which he made entirely his own. Montézin exhibited regularly at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d'Automne, and was awarded the Légion d'honneur. His work is held in numerous French public collections. The work comes from the Galerie Félix Vercel, the distinguished Parisian gallery on the Avenue Matignon and in New York that was a leading source of Post-Impressionist and modern French painting throughout the second half of the twentieth century.
