Gustave Cariot's father was a porter in the Marais district of Paris and wished his son to follow in his footsteps. Cariot served an apprenticeship but was drawn to a career in the arts. He spent his free time studying design and composition and sketching in the city and the surrounding countryside.
Gustave Cariot was initially attracted to the tonalities of pointillism but his enthusiasm for the technique was short-lived. Instead, he developed a highly personal and unusual technique that imparted a powerful luminosity to his work as a whole. He was however prepared to abandon this technique on occasion in the interests of painting delicate landscapes. He painted a large number of landscapes, many of them featuring the Rhineland. His last 'suite' of paintings was devoted to the River Seine in all its different seasonal aspects.
Cariot was a member of the Société des Artistes Indépendants. He exhibited at the Salon de la Société des Beaux-Arts, the Salon d'Automne and the Salon d'Hiver.
