Jules Rene Herve Paintings
Jules Rene Herve began his formal art studies in an evening school in Langres, France. Hervé was trained at the Ecole nationale supérieure d’arts decoratifs of Paris, and studied with Fernand Cormon and Jules Adler.
As early as 1910, his work was shown in Paris Salons where his paintings were described as “jewels” of French scenery.
He was awarded a gold medal at the Salon des artistes français in 1925, and a gold medal at the 1937 World's Fair. Elected vice-president of the Salon des artistes français. Then, Hervé retired from public life. Hervé is a painter of the scenes of the Parisian life. Paris, seen by Hervé, is the city of poetry, the "city of lights" that he painted in the wake of the Impressionists. He also painted many views of his hometown. He was famous for his scenes of religious processions. His paintings are now preserved in many museums in France, the Petit Palais in Paris, Langres, Dijon, Saint-Etienne, Tourcoing, Annecy and abroad, the Chicago Museum and Casablanca. His paintings are now sought by many fans in France and abroad where he met with great success. All are seduced by its light and colours as well as its Parisian scenes full of charm.
His work has been purchased by most of the leading museums in France and although he represented the purest tradition of French art and paints with great impressionism, he was completely unaffected by the current fashion of art. He has always sought to master the technical secrets of art and painted with a marvellous harmony of colour and light.
Elected Vice President of the Salon des Artistes Francais and a member of The Jury of the Society of French Artists.
As specialist dealers in the work of Jules Rene Herve, we have bought and sold in excess of 300 paintings by the artist over the last 20 years. We are considered as experts on his work and have analysed his paintings in detail across the many decades that he painted. Where his style matured and developed, especially his colour palette and his later board brushwork.
Invariably his work is signed both on the recto and verso and it is most unusual to find a painting that is NOT signed on the back. His work was not copied very often but on the odd occasion that we do see work come up that bears his signature the paint and brushwork do not correspond and the paintings are hardly ever signed on the reverse.
In the last few years, there has been an increase in forgeries of his paintings and if you are in any doubt about a work that you own or are considering purchasing then we will offer a verbal opinion on the work based on photographs free of charge.
