| Literature | A steam fishing boat rides out alone on a green sea beneath a breaking storm, the sky split on the diagonal between a bank of heavy violet and slate-blue cloud sweeping in from the right and a band of clear lemon-yellow light still holding over the horizon at the left. The sea is laid in with short, broken strokes of acid green, jade and turquoise, and in the foreground a strip of rose-pink shingle closes the composition along the bottom edge. The boat itself, with its dark hull and upright masts, is set down in a few decisive touches almost at the centre of the picture, small against the weather. Luce has abandoned the systematic dot of his Neo-Impressionist years for a freer, faster stroke, but he keeps its lessons: pure, unmixed colour, violet set against yellow, green against rose, so that the whole surface vibrates. Born in Paris, Luce trained as a wood engraver before joining Seurat, Signac and Pissarro among the Neo-Impressionists, exhibiting at the Salon des Indépendants from 1887. A committed anarchist, he was imprisoned in 1894 during the Procès des Trente. He painted the Channel and Breton coasts throughout his career, settled at Rolleboise on the Seine from 1917, and served as president of the Société des Artistes Indépendants from 1935. The largest public collection of his work is at the Musée de l'Hôtel-Dieu, Mantes-la-Jolie. |
