Summary

Sunlight filters through a screen of trees on the banks of the Seine at Poissy. Dark trunks in violet, indigo and russet rise across the foreground and frame a view of the river beyond, where the water glimmers in pale lilac, cream and blue. Wooded slopes on the far bank melt into a haze of rose, green and gold. The grassy bank in the foreground is a mosaic of vivid touches: acid yellow, emerald, turquoise and pink. Dappled light and cool shadow play across the ground, and feathery foliage at the top of the composition is shot through with daylight. Luce was one of the leading figures of Neo-Impressionism, a close friend of Seurat, Signac and Pissarro, and a committed anarchist. In 1894, the year before this work was painted, he was imprisoned and tried in the anarchist Procès des Trente before being acquitted. By the mid-1890s he had begun to loosen the strict dot of pointillism into the freer, broader dashes seen here, keeping the luminous logic of divided colour while giving his brushwork more energy and spontaneity. The result is a vibrant, intimate river landscape. Its provenance from Wildenstein & Co., one of the most distinguished dealers in French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painting, adds to its interest.
