Born 25 November 1871, in Philadelphia; died 1 January 1929.

    Painter. Urban landscapes, seascapes, landscapes.

Clarence Montfort Gihon began his artistic education in America, where he studied under Chase and Kenyon in New York, and then continued his training with Jean-Paul Laurens and Benjamin-Constant at the Académie Julian in Paris. He settled in France in 1884 and painted the majority of his works there. He mainly painted landscapes inspired by French beauty spots, views of Paris by night and scenes at popular Parisian balls. He had an interesting Neo-Impressionist, sometimes Pointillist technique. He was also a skilled draughtsman and etcher. He produced many drawings for works by George Sand, and collaborated on the production of theatre sets.

He took part in many exhibitions throughout the world. In 2001 some of his works were included in the exhibition The Golden Age of Painting in Brittany ( L’Âge d’or de la peinture en Bretagne), at the Musée de Vannes, La Cohue.
