Verger en Fleurs, Grez-sur-Loing belongs to the most significant chapter in Robert William Vonnoh's career — the years he spent at Grez-sur-Loing, the celebrated artists' colony south of Paris on the edge of the Fontainebleau forest. It was here, from 1887 onwards, that Vonnoh discovered Impressionism properly, exchanged the formal constraints of his teaching career for open-air painting, and produced the work that would change American art. Born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1858, Vonnoh trained in Boston and at the Académie Julian in Paris before settling into the rhythms of Grez. The colony attracted painters from across Europe and America drawn by the particular quality of light along the river Loing — soft, green, endlessly varied. Vonnoh responded to it with a boldness that surprised those who knew his earlier work: paint broadly applied, colour heightened, form dissolved into atmosphere. A painting of an orchard in bloom is precisely the kind of subject that drew him back to Grez year after year. The seasonal drama of flowering trees — white and pink against the pale sky — gave him everything he needed. Vonnoh's work is held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Indianapolis Museum of Art. He was among the first painters to bring European Impressionism home to America, and his students included Robert Henri, William Glackens and Maxfield Parrish.
