Maurice Réalier-Dumas was a pupil of Jean Léon Gérome. He made various trips to Italy and North Africa. He exhibited at the Salon de Paris, then at the Salon des Artistes Français, of which he became a member in 1881. He gained an honourable mention in 1861, as well as in 1889, for the Exposition Universelle, a third-class medal in 1896 and a bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle in 1900. He was made a Chevalier of the Legion d'honneur in 1908.
A painter of the Imperial epoch, he executed great historical compositions. He also painted views of Italy with prominent whites and riverbanks frequently prompted by an anecdote.
