Literature: This outstanding early work by Carlos-Reymond dates to his period working with Paul Signac in Saint Tropez between 1903 and 1905. The work is very close to an earlier Signac composition of the harbour and was likely painted under Signac's guidance.

Born 1884, in Paris; died 1970.
Painter, watercolourist, fresco artist, engraver. Landscapes, seascapes.
Carlos-Reymond received encouragement from Claude Monet when he was just 16 years old and his artistic development throughout his career appears to have been influenced by chance encounters with prominent artists. His earliest work comprises lively street scenes of Paris, but after moving to St Tropez in 1903, he was attracted to the works of the Neo-Impressionists and the Divisionists, in particular. In St Tropez he met and was taken under the wing of Paul Signac. He married Henri Lebasque's daughter in 1919 and after moving to Cimiez in 1941, he was befriended by Henri Matisse.
Carlos-Reymond appears to have devoted himself almost exclusively to seascapes, many of them painted during his various and frequent visits to Brittany, the Mediterranean coast, Italy and North Africa. He worked equally well in oils and watercolours, in frescoes and lithographs. In each instance, his work is distinguished by a high degree of luminosity.
He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants between 1905 and 1921 and also exhibited solo in Paris between 1922 and 1960. He was awarded two gold medals at the Decorative Arts Salon in 1925 and was made a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur.
