| About this Painting | Out of a dusk of olive and gold rises the skyline of New York, its towers dissolved into a shimmering mosaic of window-lights — flecks of yellow, orange and acid-green struck across the panel in Le Sidaner's unmistakable divided touch. Below, the harbour lies in deep shadow, the dark hulls of shipping massed at the waterline as the city glitters above like a lit hive. It is a nocturne of arrival in every sense: the great Intimist of silent gardens and lamplit interiors here turning, uniquely, to the modern American metropolis, yet subduing all its clamour to the hushed, jewelled reverie that is his alone. The handling is rich and encrusted, the light seeming to breathe from within the paint. The picture is exceptional in the artist's oeuvre — one of only two recorded works Le Sidaner painted in the United States, and among the last twenty-five paintings destined for the Galeries Georges Petit before its bankruptcy in 1931. It descends through the artist's family, from Louis Le Sidaner to Étienne Le Sidaner and thence a French private collection, and has been exhibited at the Musée Galliera, Paris, and the Galerie de l'Art Belge, Brussels. It is accompanied by a photo-certificate from Yann Farinaux-Le Sidaner and will be included in the forthcoming supplement to the catalogue raisonné. |
