Literature: Yoshiwara was the primary government-sanctioned red-light district in Edo (modern-day Tokyo), established in 1617 to control prostitution. It was a walled, gated, and moated area known for high-class courtesans (oiran), kabuki, and, by the 18th century, a population of 9,000 women. Today, it survives as an active adult entertainment district.

Born in Paris, Georges Dantu exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français and at the Salon des Orientalistes. He was represented by the Devambez Gallery, as well as Galerie Georges Petit in Paris.
Specializing in winter landscapes and views of Japan, he obtained a certain level of success in his lifetime with his beautiful fields of flowering irises, his walls of hanging wisteria on water banks, and his views of Fujiyama.
His most well-known work is conserved in the collection of the Musée Carnavalet in Paris. It is an intriguing image of a bronze rhinoceros, under the snow in the Trocadéro Gardens of Paris.
