Born in Nantes, Jules Le Ray spent his holidays in Pouldu from 1885 with his family. During the summer of 1890 he joined the group of painters known as the Pont Aven School who were gathered at Marie Henry's Inn - Le Pouldu. Among them were Gauguin, Serusier, Meyer De Haan and Henry Moret.
Paul Gauguin, from whom his parents bought three paintings, gave him drawing lessons and he subsequently became very close friends with Henry Moret whose old house he rented in 1923.
At the end of the 19th century, during his stay in Doélan, his works were influenced by the post-impressionism of Henry Moret before evolving in the 1920s towards a pre cubism style. he painted almost entirely views of Brittany.
Jules Le Ray died at Carnac in 1938.
