    Charles Menneret Biography

    View full artist profile

Charles Louis Menneret, born January 22, 1876, in Paris and deceased February 6, 1954, in Hermeray. Menneret was a French landscape painter, engraver, and sculptor.

Several of his works are held in public collections in Paris, Charolles, Chaumont, Marseille, Saint-Brieuc, Rennes, Troyes, and Locronan.

Charles Menneret (Paris 1876-1954) was a painter of landscapes, mainly those of Brittany. Menneret stated : "I love the Breton moorland, the trees near the rocks, the legend of the old stones, the ancient wooden saints and the centuries-old calvaries that stand facing the sea."
In this Brittany, the artist chose a favorite spot - the strip of land that stretches from the Pointe de l'Arcouest to Paimpol, facing the Isle of Bréhat with its pink rocks. Charles Menneret worked there, in Loguivy de la Mer, for several months of the year. But in his Parisian studio on Avenue Trudaine, one was still transported to Brittany: a built-in bed (lit clos), sculptures of wooden saints, Breton earthenware, models of Paimpol dundees and other ancient caravels.

A portion of his works is conserved in the Museums of Fine Arts of Rennes, Nantes, Brest, Saint-Brieuc, as well as that of Troyes.
