| About this Painting | The sun-drenched harbour of Saint-Tropez comes vividly to life in this exquisite oil on canvas by Yvonne Canu, one of the very few female exponents of French Pointillism. Moored sailboats rest on shimmering green-blue water before a backdrop of warm ochre and terracotta houses, the village bell-tower rising at centre beneath a tricolour and a sky dappled in soft pastel light. Following in the tradition of Paul Signac, Canu settled in Saint-Tropez and remained faithful to the Pointillist style throughout her life, making this beloved fishing port her signature subject. Trained at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, Canu embraced Neo-Impressionism in the mid-1950s under the spell of Seurat's A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. Built from countless dots of pure, unblended pigment that fuse optically into radiant colour, her canvases capture the light, motion and tranquil spirit of the Mediterranean coast. A jewel-like example of Canu's celebrated technique, this work distils the timeless charm of the Côte d'Azur. |
