“Le peintre en plein air”

A painter standing at his easel in an open field — his back to us, a white umbrella shading his canvas from the midday sun, his paint box open on a folding table in the foreground, two figures watching from a distance across the green. It is a painting about painting: about the act of going outdoors and looking at the world directly, which is what Impressionism meant in practice and what Charles Angrand (1854–1926) was committed to from the very beginning of his career. The composition has a quiet authority that belies the painter's age — Angrand was twenty-seven when he made this, and already thinking seriously about space, light and the relationship between figure and landscape. The green field stretches to the horizon under a pale sky, its surface built from varied, confident strokes that suggest depth and movement without labouring it. The painter at the easel is rendered with economy — a dark jacket, grey trousers, black hair, the hands held behind the back in the attitude of someone looking carefully at what they are about to paint. The paint box in the foreground is the most detailed passage in the canvas, its colours — the dots of red, yellow, blue on the palette — the only notes of concentrated colour in a composition otherwise given over to the green and grey of a Norman field in spring. This is a document of a specific artistic moment as much as a painting. 1881 was the year Angrand exhibited at the École des Beaux-Arts in Rouen, the year before he moved to Paris and encountered the Impressionists fully, the year before he would form the friendships and absorb the ideas that would eventually lead him to Seurat and Pointillism. The plein air painter in this canvas is Impressionism's central figure — the artist outdoors, looking directly at light — painted by a young man about to discover everything. The provenance and exhibition history of this work are exceptional. It was shown at the Exposition du Grand Prix at the École des Beaux-Arts in Rouen in 1881 — the year it was painted — and has been included in four subsequent museum exhibitions, including the landmark L'École de Rouen exhibition at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen in 1996 and the major Angrand retrospective at the Musée de Pontoise in 2006. It is illustrated in François Lespinasse's scholarly study of Angrand's correspondence, and in Bogomila Welsh-Ovcharov's foundational research into Angrand's contact with Vincent van Gogh. A work of this documentary importance — exhibited in its own year, published in the scholarship, held in a private German collection before appearing here — represents a category of acquisition that rarely reaches the open market.
