About this painting

The Parc Monceau is one of the most painted corners of Paris — Monet returned to it repeatedly in the 1870s, drawn by the particular quality of its dappled light and the elegance of its promenaders. When Georges Lapchine (1885–1950) painted it, he brought to the subject something none of his predecessors could offer: the eye of a Russian seeing Paris as only an outsider fully in love with a city can see it. Born in Moscow in 1885 and trained at the Stroganov Academy before arriving in Paris to study under Fernand Cormon and Léon Lhermitte, Lapchine spent years moving between Russia and France before settling permanently in Paris in 1924. By then he had absorbed the Impressionist tradition completely — not as a student of theory but as a painter who had spent two decades looking at French light and learning what it demanded. His palette in park and garden subjects has a warmth and freshness that reflects both his training and his temperament: colour used with the directness of someone for whom painting is instinctive pleasure. The handling of light through foliage — that particular broken, flickering quality that makes a painting of a park feel alive rather than merely picturesque — is where his Impressionist inheritance shows most clearly. The paint is applied with confident, varied brushwork, the tones carefully observed and laid down without hesitation. Lapchine exhibited regularly at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon des Artistes Français from 1925. He was also a stage designer of note, creating sets for the Folies Bergères in Paris and the Sésame cabaret in Monte Carlo — and, perhaps most remarkably, a tenor of sufficient quality to sing regularly with the Russian Opera in Paris. His paintings are held in the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow and the Kazan Art Museum.
