Summary

A screen of foliage fills almost the whole canvas. Branches sweep in from the upper right and arch down across the picture, drawn in dark sinuous lines of umber and plum, and everything between and beneath them is built from short separated touches — emerald, viridian, turquoise, acid yellow, flecks of white and rose — so that leaf, shadow and light dissolve into a single vibrating surface. Through a gap in the middle distance a stretch of water shows in cool violet and lavender, with a solitary figure in a boat. The subject declares itself only at the lower right, where four figures in straw boaters and pale summer dresses are gathered at the water’s edge, rendered in creamy yellow, white and blue against the surrounding green. They are small, late-noticed, and perfectly placed: the whole picture turns on the discovery of them. De la Villéon was born at Fougères in Ille-et-Vilaine and went to Paris in 1880 to study at the Académie Julian. He began painting from life in 1884 and moved towards Impressionism around 1890, exhibiting at the Salon des Indépendants from 1888, at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts from 1890 — becoming an associate member in 1908 — and at the Salon d’Automne from 1903. He worked in Brittany, the Nivernais, Switzerland and around Paris. The Musée Emmanuel de la Villéon at Fougères, housed in the town’s oldest surviving house, is devoted to his work.
