About this Painting Early evening on the Riva degli Schiavoni, looking west along the quay towards the Piazzetta. The Campanile of San Marco rises pink against a sky of turquoise shading down to gold, the arcades of the Doge's Palace run away to the left, and beyond the water the domes of Santa Maria della Salute stand pale on the horizon. In the foreground a moored gondola with its felze, a second working out into the basin, and figures moving along the broad pink pavement — a woman in dark skirts, a man with a basket, others crossing the Ponte della Paglia. To the right, the green bronze of the Victor Emmanuel II monument. The whole is built from small separate touches of colour laid side by side, the paving worked in warm pink and coral, the water in broken strokes of green, blue and gold. Gaidan was born in Nîmes to a wealthy banking family, studied under Charles Jalabert in Paris and the Toulon landscape painter Paulin Bertrand, and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1887 to 1903. Independently wealthy, he painted at his own pace and chiefly in Provence, at Nîmes, Toulon, Hyères and Carqueiranne, where he kept the Villa des Agaves. He adopted something of Cézanne's method of building form from repeated small strokes, and his restrained pointillism is often compared with that of Henri Martin. His work is in the museums of Nîmes, Marseille, Toulon and Sète, and at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
