Born 1887, in Nice; died 1959, in Nice.
Painter, watercolourist, illustrator, poster artist, designer. Landscapes. Murals, designs for tapestries.
Édouard de Fer settled in Paris, enrolling at the École des Arts Décoratifs, and then at the École des Beaux-Arts and exhibiting, from 1925, at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants in Paris. In 1923 he decorated the Bibliothèque Municipale in Nice with a canvas entitled: Nice: Muse to Arts and Letters. Other projects included the saloon of the steamboat 'Ile de France' in 1928, and the Hall of Nations in the Palace of Peace, in New Jersey, USA, with an enormous painting: The Tree of Minerva. He executed landscapes, and in a large part of his work, he painted with luminous, almost blinding tints. Indeed, he created numerous posters praising the sun of the Riviera. Édouard de Fer wrote a theoretical work, Solfeggio of Colour ( Solfège de la couleur), in which he clearly developed the scientific principles of Neo-Impressionism. He wrote the following: 'Given that the resulting optical effect is exact, it matters little the manner in which the Neo-Impressionist positions his brushstroke: let us try to see farther than the formula' Showing a certain independence with regard to the theories of his friends Maximilien Luce, Louis Valtat and Paul Signac, he often spaced his strokes, allowing the underneath of the canvas to appear in his paintings
