“Dieppedalle – Bords de la Seine”

( 1878 – 1942 )
Les Bords de Seine à Dieppedalle (The Banks of the Seine at Dieppedalle) — A broad, slow curve of the Seine just downstream of Rouen on a bright afternoon: pale clouds piled in a tall summer sky, a quai of pale-stone houses with red-tile roofs gathered around a slender church spire, and the wooded chalk heights of Canteleu rising behind. Figures in dark coats stroll the riverside path; a little white sail catches the light far out on the water; and to the right, the unmistakable trace of working Normandy — the tall chimney of a riverside mill, its plume of smoke drifting away on the breeze. Few painters knew this stretch of the Seine more intimately than Narcisse Guilbert. He painted it tirelessly throughout his life, and you can feel that familiarity in every confident, unforced touch — the rapid, broken brushwork of the foliage and the river, the more classical handling of the clouds above, the easy placement of the small figures that give the quai its sense of life. Light moves across the picture beautifully, and the whole canvas breathes the soft, clear Norman air. Born in 1878 in Bouville, the son of a joiner, Guilbert made his own way to the École des Beaux-Arts in Rouen, where he studied under Philippe Zacharie before joining Joseph Delattre's Académie Libre. In 1907 he became a founder-exhibitor of the Société des Artistes Rouennais, and went on to be a central figure in the Rouen School alongside Albert Lebourg, Pierre Dumont and his close friend Robert Antoine Pinchon, with whom he exhibited regularly right up to their final joint show in 1941. A noted local hero — several streets in Seine-Maritime carry his name — Guilbert produced some 2,500 paintings in his lifetime. Les Bords de Seine à Dieppedalle shows precisely the qualities that earned him that affection.
