Summary

On a table draped with a golden-brown cloth, a white footed comport holds a pyramid of pears and apples crowned by a single ripe pear. Beside it, a decorated dish is heaped with red and green apples, and a brilliant green-glazed Provençal jug stands on its terracotta base at the right. Scattered across the cloth are red and pink fruits, a split pomegranate and a lemon. Behind, the wall dissolves into a vibrant tapestry of violet, crimson and blue. Camoin trained alongside Matisse in Gustave Moreau's studio, was a friend of Cézanne and exhibited with the Fauves in 1905. Painted in Saint-Tropez late in his career, this still life keeps the bold colour and free brushwork of his Fauve youth. The work is included in the Archives Camoin, the authority on the artist's oeuvre, which confirms its authenticity.
