Summary

Narcisse Guilbert (French, 1878–1942), Champ de blé aux coquelicots, oil on canvas, signed lower left — a high-summer wheatfield by a leading painter of the École de Rouen. Ripe wheat fills two-thirds of the canvas, laid in with rapid diagonal strokes of gold, ochre and cream, with poppies and cornflowers flickering through it. A screen of dark summer trees closes the left, sheltering a thatched roof; beyond, a farm and a line of blue hills recede under a high sky of white cumulus, with a thread of smoke rising at the right. The picture turns on a single opposition — the blue-green mass of the trees against the heat of the corn — and Guilbert lets the field carry it, keeping the sky broad and pale so that nothing competes. The son of a joiner, Guilbert learned to paint from Joseph Delattre before entering the École des Beaux-Arts in Rouen at seventeen under Philippe Zacharie, and won the academy's Prix Pellecat in 1910, which paid for the Breton coastal journeys that shaped his marine work. He was a founding exhibitor with the Société des Artistes Rouennais in 1907, showed at their Salon until 1936, and worked within the circle around Albert Lebourg and Pierre Dumont. Retrospectives followed at Galerie André Watteau, Paris, in 1969 and Arthur Tooth & Sons, London, in 1970
