Summary

A caravan moves across the open desert in the last light, the whole picture given over to a single sustained orange that rises from the sand through the sky to pale gold at the zenith. A lead camel strides out at the right under a bundle striped red and green; behind it the train recedes into haze, with laden beasts and a small donkey half dissolved in the glare. A figure in a white burnous walks at the centre, bare feet in the sand, the only cool note in the picture apart from the violet shadows thrown long across the ground. A clump of date palms stands against the horizon at the right, marking the oasis the caravan is making for. Delahogue was born at Soissons and travelled the Maghreb with his twin brother Eugène, working their way from Algiers to Constantine and on through El Kantara to Biskra. Both exhibited as members of the Société des Peintres Orientalistes and the Société des Artistes Algériens et Orientalistes. Alexis was the brother drawn to Bedouin life itself — the journeys, the markets, the fantasia — and this is that subject at its most distilled.
