Summary

A generous bouquet of field and garden flowers — anemones with their dark hearts, white and yellow marguerites, and a scatter of poppies and pinks — spills from a blue-and-white vase set on a bare table before half-open shutters. Dyf works alla prima and thickly, loading each flower-head with buttery, broken touches of knife and brush so that the paint itself seems to bloom, while the cool grey-greens of the shutters and the warm terracotta of the table hold the riot of colour in balance. Light floods from the left, catching the porcelain and scattering across the cloth; it is high summer, caught at its most abundant and informal. Born Marcel Dreyfus in Paris, Dyf was a self-taught painter who took his lead from Renoir and the Impressionists, and is often counted among the last of their line. From his studios in Arles, Paris and Cannes he painted Provence and Brittany, the Arlésiennes and his wife Claudine, and above all flowers — the still lifes are among his most characteristic and desirable works, keenly collected in France, Britain and the United States. A rich and typical example.
