    View full artist profile

Monchablon, the son of a provincial doctor, studied with Alexandre Cabanel and Jean-Paul Laurens. During a stay in the Netherlands, he changed his first name from Jean to Jan. He abandoned historical and mythological subjects early on for landscapes. The catalogue of his work includes 264 paintings. He exhibited in Paris at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1881 to 1890. He received silver medals at the Exposition Universelle in 1889 and 1900 and was nominated into the Legion d'Honneur in 1905, a year after his death in 1904.

He has been at times confused with another artist of the same surname.
