Andre Salmon Paintings
André Salmon was one of the small group of writers who stood at the centre of modern painting as it was being invented, and the first to set down its history.
Born in Paris in 1881, the son of an engraver, he was working in banking when he met Guillaume Apollinaire around 1903. The two founded the little review Le Festin d’Ésope, and Salmon left the bank for bohemia. By 1907 he was living at the Bateau-Lavoir, the Montmartre building where Picasso had his studio, and it was there that he watched Les Demoiselles d’Avignon take shape — one of very few people to see the picture made.
His decisive book was La Jeune Peinture française of 1912, the first study to argue that the Demoiselles had detonated a revolution in art; its chapter “Histoire anecdotique du cubisme” remains a primary source for the movement. He wrote for L’Intransigeant, Paris-Journal, Gil Blas and Le Petit Parisien, published poetry and novels, and late in life three volumes of memoirs, Souvenirs sans fin.
He was also among the earliest champions of Foujita: it was Salmon who wrote the text for the Japanese painter’s first one-man exhibition, 110 watercolours shown at the Galerie Chéron in Paris from 1 June 1917. His book Montparnasseremains one of the essential accounts of that quarter and its École de Paris. He was himself painted by Picasso, Modigliani, Marie Laurencin and Survage.
