Alfred Aaron Wolmark moved to London with his family while still a child. He trained at the Royal Academy, London, from 1894. He then settled in London.

His early work shows the influence of Rembrandt, while his colouring later became more vibrant. Wolmark drew and painted many portraits, including those of Thomas Hardy, Somerset Maugham, and Israel Zangwill.

Wolmark started to exhibit in 1901; his work first won recognition in 1906 at the Whitechapel Exhibition. In 1910 he took part in the first London Post-Impressionist exhibition.
