Summary

The view from San Giorgio Maggiore across the lagoon towards the Campanile of San Marco is one of the great set pieces of Venetian painting — a composition that has tested artists for centuries. Antoine Bouvard Senior (1870–1955) made it his own particular territory, returning to Venice repeatedly throughout the 1920s and 1930s and producing some of the most accomplished and atmospheric paintings of the city ever made. Bouvard came to painting by an unusual route. Born in the Isère in 1870, he trained as an architect at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and rose to become Director of Architectural Services for the Seine — responsible among other things for the construction of the Bourse du Travail and the Boulevard Morland. The architectural eye never left him. His Venetian paintings have a structural confidence that sets them apart from more impressionistic treatments of the same subjects — he understood buildings from the inside, and it shows in the way he placed them within water and light. His greatest influence was Félix Ziem, the Barbizon painter whose own lifelong love of Venice had shaped the tradition that Bouvard inherited. But where Ziem was romantic and sometimes theatrical, Bouvard was more precise — interested above all in light as it actually behaves on water, stone and sky at particular moments of the Venetian day. He exhibited across France and Italy throughout his lifetime and worked under the pseudonym Marc Aldine for the French market. His son Noël followed him into painting, working in a closely related style. Antoine Bouvard Senior remains the most esteemed painter of the Venetian genre of his generation.
