| Literature | This work was exhibited by Hermelin during his visit to America in 1876 as Commissioner for the Swedish art exhibit at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. The railroad connection between Cape May and Phildaelphia was very efficient and made Cape May a perfect spot for weekend breaks for Philadelphians of the time. The painting has some notable inclusions which are the black couple in the front right of the scene - in New Jersey slavery was only completely abolished a decade before this work was painted so from a historical point of view this work is interesting as it shows their rapid inclusion into mainstream society in the North of the country. |
