ProvenanceThe painting comes from the collection of the artist's brother, the painter Eugène Boch (1855–1941). A pupil of Bonnat and Cormon in Paris and introduced to Vincent van Gogh by Dodge MacKnight, Eugène became Van Gogh's friend and the sitter for the portrait now in the Musée d'Orsay. It passed by descent to the French family who inherited the Boch collection, and so has remained out of public view since the artist's lifetime. For an identical provenance, compare the works from the former Eugène Boch collection sold at Drouot-Richelieu on 18 March 1996 (Me Bondu, salle 2, Succession de Mme X).

Summary

A sunlit tangle of undergrowth, built stroke by stroke from pure colour. A pale, twisting tree rises at the right, its bark catching the light in touches of rose, lilac and cream, and throws its bare limbs across a shimmering screen of blue, green and violet foliage; before it, the meadow breaks into flecks of yellow, jade and pink, dense as a tapestry. Boch works here in the divisionist manner she took from Théo van Rysselberghe and Paul Signac — small, separate strokes of unmixed pigment that fuse in the eye into vibrating light — but with a warmth and freedom that are entirely her own. There is no incident, no horizon, no anecdote: only a corner of woodland in high summer, seen close and given whole as pure sensation. It is plein-air painting of real conviction, the work of an artist who had stood before Seurat's Grande Jatte and understood exactly what the broken touch could do. Boch was the only woman admitted to Les XX and among the finest of the Belgian Neo-Impressionists; her work is held by the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, the Mu.ZEE and the Musée d'Orsay. This radiant example descends from the collection of her brother, the painter Eugène Boch, Van Gogh's friend and sitter.
