René Rousseau-Decelle studied under Bouguereau, Gabriel Ferrier, Edouard Toudouze and Marcel Baschet. From the teachings of these academic masters he evolved towards more modern forms. A painter of the Parisian smart set, he turned to landscapes when staying in the Vendée. At the end of his life he decorated the Chapel at Préfailles, where he lived. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, of which he was an associate member from 1903. The Musée Municipal of La Roche-sur-Yon (Vendée) dedicated a retrospective exhibition to him in 1988. He was a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur.
