Louis Aimé Japy studied under Français and under Corot. Early in his career he painted subjects in Italy, but he mostly painted scenes in France, especially in the Jura and the Doubs. He began to show work at the Paris Salon in 1864, and won a medal in 1870 and a second-class medal in 1873. He became a member of the Société des Artistes Français in 1883, won silver medals at the Exposiitions Universelles in Paris in 1889 and 1900 and was made a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur in 1906.
